What Flowers Are in Season in Ireland Right Now? A Month-by-Month Guide

Through the Irish summer, sunflowers, dahlias, sweet pea and hydrangea are all at their best, while peonies peak slightly earlier in late spring. Spring belongs to daffodils and tulips, and autumn and winter favour chrysanthemums, dahlias, asters and evergreen foliage. Choosing bouquets built around what's actually in season is one of the simplest ways to send more sustainable flowers, and Flowers Made Easy delivers seasonal bouquets same-day across Dublin on orders before 2pm (1pm on Fridays), with next-day delivery nationwide.

Not every flower is available all year round, and that's actually a good thing. Flowers grown in their natural season need less artificial heat, less forced light and shorter transport routes to reach a vase looking their best. Choosing seasonal flowers is one of the easiest sustainable choices you can make when sending a bouquet, and it usually means a fresher, longer-lasting arrangement too, since a flower harvested at its natural peak has had the right growing conditions rather than being coaxed into bloom out of turn.

Why seasonal flowers are a more sustainable choice

Flowers forced to bloom out of season typically need artificial heat and supplementary light to grow, and are more likely to have travelled a long distance to reach an Irish florist, since Ireland's climate can't produce them naturally at that time of year. Flowers grown in season, by contrast, are grown in the conditions they're naturally suited to, which means less energy spent getting them to bloom and often a shorter journey from grower to bouquet. It's the same principle as eating seasonal, local produce, just applied to what goes in the vase rather than on the plate.

Irish flower seasons, month by month

Spring (March to May). Daffodils are one of the first flowers of the Irish spring, thriving even in unpredictable early-season weather, and are widely grown here on a commercial scale. Tulips follow shortly after, and although they aren't native to Ireland, they're grown here in abundance and are at their best through April. As spring moves toward early summer, ranunculus and the first peonies of the year start to appear, giving spring bouquets their soft, layered look. Browse our Spring Flowers collection for arrangements built around this time of year.

Early summer (late May to June). This is peony season proper, generally the single most in-demand seasonal flower in Irish bouquets, prized for their full, ruffled blooms in pink, purple and white. Peonies have a famously short season, typically no more than four to six weeks, which is part of why they're so sought after while they last. Sweet pea also starts to come into its own around this time, adding a light, fragrant note that Irish growers in particular do well, since sweet pea and other short-lived, delicate blooms travel poorly and are much better suited to being grown close to where they're sold. For a smaller, self-contained peony arrangement, the Peony Hatbox presents peony roses, lisianthus and statice in a deluxe hatbox, ready to display without a vase. Summer (June to August). Sunflowers reach their cheerful peak through the height of summer, alongside dahlias, which continue flowering right through to the first autumn frosts. Hydrangea is another summer favourite, giving bouquets their fuller, more textured look, and does well in Ireland's mild, damp summers. Our Sunflowers are sourced locally and delivered nation-wide, they can be seen by clicking the image below or here: https://www.flowersmadeeasy.ie/products/sunflower-burst

By this point peony season has typically ended, with the last blooms fading through late June into July. See our full Summer Flowers collection for more seasonal options.

Autumn (September to November). Dahlias carry on strongly into early autumn before frost brings their season to a close. Chrysanthemums come into their own as the weather cools, valued for their hardiness and longevity in a vase, and asters add a softer, daisy-like note in blues, purples and whites. This is also when foliage starts to shift toward richer autumnal tones. Browse our Autumn Flowers collection for arrangements suited to this time of year.

Winter (December to February). With far fewer flowers growing naturally through the Irish winter, bouquets lean more heavily on hardier stems and evergreen foliage such as eucalyptus, salal and holly, often with berries or seasonal accents added for colour. This is the time of year when imported flowers make up the largest share of any bouquet, since so little grows naturally in an Irish winter, which is worth knowing if a fully local bouquet matters to you at this time of year specifically. Our Winter Flowers collection and Christmas Flowers collection cover this period.
